the streets of d.c. -- the outrage over the death. >> and the wait is over for hungry fans. "good morning washington" continues now at 6:00. >> glad to be with you this friday morning. as we take a look at the cherry blossoms at the tidal basin this march 23. it could be your last chance to see the cherry blossoms looking this good. not an ominous warning but you might want to get out there and enjoy them. >> and we will check in with adam caskey for the details of this changing forecast but we first of breaking news from montgomery county where a police pursuit ended with two people dead. john gonzalez joins us from chevy chase with the details. >> two fatalities this morning. and we are told two people in the hospital -- one in critical condition and the other

miraculously suffered minor injuries. we are told they are in their late teens, possibly early 20's. connecticut avenue, north of chevy chase circle, has been closed for several hours and it appears it will remain that way for several more possibly through the morning rush hour. this was a devastating car wreck, to say the least. it started as a high speed police chase. police ran a tax of this small toyota and came back with a stolen car but when the officer hit his cruiser lights, the suspect began to flee. the officer immediately called for backup and k-9 unit. the chase went through several neighborhood roads, eventually down connecticut avenue toward the district. high speed, we are told. based on the damage, we understand the driver at some point lost control of the vehicle and smashed into a massive trade. police tried to get the passengers out. they were able to get the driver out in front seat passenger but

they were not able to save the two rear passengers. the driver, we are told, in critical condition. from when -- from where they still a car from is up in the air. >> some more breaking news to tell you about. crews are at the scene of an apartment fire going on in northeast d.c. firefighters tell us it started on a building at hud street and 50th place. two people were taken to the hospital. one suffered from smoke inhalation and the other, a woman in her 50s, who suffered burns. it is not clear right now how the fire actually start of the we will bring you updates when we get them. time now for traffic and weather together. >> let's start with adam caskey. it looks like a day you do not want to miss. >> take advantage of the nice weather today because things will change drastically in the upcoming weekend. dense fog advisory in a few locations.

has been a crash and the rest area eastbound 66, reston. in manassas -- rest. in manassas, two lanes are closed. >> the other big story this morning. massacre charges against a u.s. soldier accused of gunning down more than a dozen afghan civilians. today prosecutors will reportedly filed 17 counts of murder. >> and the father of two also faces numerous other counts of assault and dereliction of duty. brianne carter is live in a newsroom with the story. in army staff sergeant robert bales is reportedly facing several charges related to the shootings and afghanistan. according to a report, later today he will be charged with 17 counts of murder, six counts of assault, and six counts of attempted murder. and he is accused of leaving the base and going on a shooting rampage in afghan villages, killing 17, including nine

children and eight adults. thursday officials changed the number of those dead from 16 to 17 adding 1 more adults. word of these charges come at the same time we are learning new details about the soldier who was on his fourth tour of duty overseas at the time of the alleged incident. according to the associated press, back in 2002 bales was arrested for drunkenness of of a casino security guard and was ordered to attend and the management classes. we can learn more about this case later today when we expect the charges to be formally announced. brianne carter, abc 7 news. >> the police chief at the center of the trayvon martin ks is temporarily stepping down. sanford floored achieve bill lee says the move was to allow tensions to cool down. -- sanford, florida, police chief bill lee says the move was

>> straight ahead now, we have breaking news from montgomery county. two people dead after a police report. a live report in minutes. >> outrage over the shooting death of an unarmed it teenager in florida hits close to home. it is friday, march 23. i natasha barrett. >> i'm steve chenevey. in montgomery county, two people are dead after a police chase and grass. john gonzalez joins us once again from chevy chase with the latest details. >> police are in the process of telling this wrecked and burned car out of the circle here in chevy chase. connecticut avenue, north of chevy chase circle, has been closed for several hours. police are hoping to get it back up and running before the morning rush-hour. of this was a devastating car wreck that started with a high- speed police chase. at around 1:00 this morning police ran a tags of this small toyota and it came back as a stolen car.

when the officer had his cruiser light, the suspect began to flee. the officer immediately called for backup and k-9 units the chase went through neighborhood roads eventually down connecticut avenue toward the district. two police officers cars sustained major injuries to the front and side and at some point the driver of the stolen vehicle lost control and smashed into a massive tree in the circle and a burst into flames. >> they ran to the vehicle extracted the driver and the front seat passenger. they also got their fire extinguishers and attempted to put out the flames. there were not able to do so and not able to extract the two rear seat passengers. >> we are told the people inside the car in their late teens or early 20s. again, two fatalities. two people in the hospital. the driver undergoing surgery at this hour in critical condition. the front seat passengers
